Web Design FAQ: Your Questions, Answered
You’ve got web design FAQ questions. That’s a good sign. It means you’re doing your homework before hiring someone to handle your website or digital marketing. Here are the ones we hear most often, with straight answers from a team that’s been doing this for over 12 years.
How much does a website cost?
It depends on what you need, which I know isn’t the answer you’re looking for. A basic five-page website for a local service business runs somewhere between $3,000 and $7,000. A site with e-commerce, custom functionality, or complex integrations can be $10,000 to $25,000 or more. The better question is: what does your website need to do? If it needs to generate leads, sell products, integrate with your CRM, or handle bookings, those requirements drive the cost more than the number of pages. We start every project with a conversation about your business goals before we talk numbers. That way you’re not paying for features you don’t need, and you’re not skipping ones you do.
How long does it take to build a website?
Most projects take 4 to 8 weeks from kickoff to launch. The biggest variable isn’t us, it’s content. If you have your text, images, and branding ready to go, we move fast. If we’re waiting on copy revisions or logo files, the timeline stretches. We’ll give you a realistic timeline during our initial consultation based on your specific project scope.
Do I really need a website if I have social media?
Yes. Social media is rented space. You don’t own it, you don’t control the algorithm, and if the platform changes its rules or shuts down your account, your audience disappears overnight. A website is property you own. It’s where you control the message, collect leads, and build something that works for you 24/7. Use social media to drive people to your website, not as a replacement for one.
What is SEO and why does it matter?
SEO stands for search engine optimization. It’s the process of making your website show up when people search for what you do on Google. If someone in your area searches “plumber near me” or “best dentist in Chattanooga,” SEO is what determines whether they find you or your competitor. It matters because organic search is often the single largest source of website traffic for local businesses, and unlike paid ads, you don’t pay per click.
How long does SEO take to work?
Honest answer: 3 to 6 months before you see meaningful movement, and 6 to 12 months for strong results. Anyone who promises you page one rankings in 30 days is either lying or using tactics that’ll get your site penalized. SEO is a long game. The businesses that commit to it consistently are the ones that dominate their local market year after year. We’ll show you progress along the way so you know it’s working before the big results hit.
What’s the difference between SEO and Google Ads?
SEO gets you free traffic from organic search results over time. Google Ads gets you paid traffic right now. SEO is the long game, Google Ads is the fast lane. Most businesses benefit from both. We typically recommend starting Google Ads for immediate leads while building your SEO foundation for sustainable traffic. Once your organic rankings are strong, you can scale back ad spend or shift it to new keywords.
Do you work with businesses outside of Chattanooga?
We do. About half our clients are in the Chattanooga and greater Tennessee area, and the other half are spread across the country. Web design, SEO, and digital marketing are location-independent services. We use video calls, screen shares, and project management tools to keep everything moving regardless of where you are. That said, if you’re local and want to meet in person, we’re happy to do that too.
Will I be able to update my own website?
Yes. Every site we build runs on WordPress, and we make sure you know how to update content, add blog posts, and make basic changes yourself. We provide training after launch. For bigger changes like adding new pages, restructuring navigation, or technical updates, that’s where we come in. Many of our clients handle their own day-to-day updates and call us when they need something more involved.
What if I already have a website but it’s not performing?
That’s actually the majority of the projects we take on. Most businesses come to us with a site that exists but isn’t generating leads, ranking in search, or representing their business well. We’ll audit your current site, tell you straight what’s working and what isn’t, and recommend whether a redesign, a rebuild, or targeted improvements make the most sense for your situation and budget.
How do I know if my website is actually working?
You track it. Google Analytics 4 shows you who’s visiting, where they come from, and what they do on your site. Google Search Console shows you which searches you’re appearing in and how often people click through. If you don’t have these set up, you’re flying blind. We set up analytics and reporting for every client so you can see exactly what your website is doing for your business each month.
What does a web design agency actually do?
We design and build websites, but that’s the surface answer. What we really do is build a digital presence that generates business for you. That means web design and development, search engine optimization, Google Ads management, content strategy, analytics and reporting, and ongoing maintenance. Think of us like a general contractor for your online presence. You could hire separate specialists for each piece, but having one team that understands how it all fits together gets better results.
Why should I hire an agency instead of doing it myself?
You can absolutely build a website yourself using Squarespace, Wix, or WordPress. For some businesses, that’s the right call, especially early on when budget is tight. But there’s a difference between a website that exists and a website that performs. If your site needs to rank in search, convert visitors to leads, load fast on mobile, and look like a business customers can trust, that takes experience in design, development, SEO, and conversion optimization working together. Of course I want you to do business with us, but whoever you choose, make sure they understand that a website is a business tool, not just a digital brochure.
