The First Website, and How Far We’ve Come

It’s hard to believe that there was a time when the internet didn’t exist. But there was, and believe it or not, the first website wasn’t created until 1991. The man responsible for creating the first website is Tim Berners-Lee, who is now widely considered to be the “father of the internet.”

The first website was actually more simple than you would think.  Tim Berners-Lee is credited with creating the first website. The website was created on August 6, 1991 and was originally designed to be an information sharing tool for physicists working on particle physics at CERN. The website consisted of a single page with links to other resources on the web. Over time, the website grew and became more comprehensive. Today, there are billions of websites on the internet with a vast array of content. However, this page laid the foundation for what would eventually become the World Wide Web.


Interestingly enough, the first website wasn’t actually available to the general public until 1993—two years after it was created! That’s because the internet wasn’t yet accessible to non-government organizations or private individuals. In fact, it wasn’t until 1995 that the World Wide Web became truly accessible to everyone when commercial internet service providers began offering dial-up services to regular people like you and me.

Now, fast forward nearly 30 years later, and the internet is used for everything from ordering takeout to streaming movies and TV shows. It’s hard to imagine life without it! In fact, for many of us, the internet has become an essential part of our everyday lives.  There are over 1 billion websites on the internet. 85% of those sites are based in North America, but almost 60% of internet users are based in Asia. And there’s no denying that the internet has come a long way since its humble beginnings as an information resource for CERN employees!


But wait—we’ve saved the best for last. Do you know when the first website was used for business? That would be August 11, 1994, when a company called NetMarket (now known as Amazon) launched their online marketplace selling books and music CDs. The rest is history!


Businesses have also benefited greatly from the rise of the internet. No longer do businesses have to rely on offline methods like print advertising or TV commercials to reach their target audiences. Instead, they can use platforms like Google AdWords or Facebook Ads to target customers with laser precision. The internet has completely changed the way businesses operate, and there’s no going back!


Who would have thought that something as simple as a page of research papers would lay the foundation for something as ubiquitous as the internet? Certainly not Tim Berners-Lee, who probably had no idea that his creation would one day change the world.
